What Are the 4 Types of Industrial Automation?
The four types of industrial automation are fixed, programmable, flexible, and integrated automation. Fixed automation runs one high-volume process. Programmable automation can be reconfigured between batches. Flexible automation changes products with little or no downtime. The Four Types, With Examples
- Fixed automation (also called hard automation): built around one product at high volume, like a bottling line or an engine machining line. Fast and efficient, but costly to change.
- Programmable automation: equipment that gets reprogrammed between production runs, like CNC machines and batch processing. Fits medium volumes with regular changeovers.
- Flexible automation: systems that switch between products with minimal downtime, like robotic cells that change tooling and programs automatically as the schedule shifts.
- Integrated automation: the whole operation coordinated by software, with PLCs, robots, conveyors, and data systems working as one, like a modern automated warehouse.
