What Is Rigging in Industrial Construction?
In industrial construction, rigging is the planned lifting and moving of heavy equipment and materials using cranes, hoists, slings, and specialized hardware. Riggers calculate load weights and centers of gravity, select gear rated for the pick, and follow an engineered lift plan so machinery lands exactly where it belongs without damage or injury. This is different from rigging in animation or sailing; industrial rigging is a skilled construction trade built around safe, controlled lifts.
What Industrial Rigging Involves
Every serious lift starts on paper. Riggers verify the load’s weight and center of gravity, choose slings, shackles, and spreader bars rated for the job, and plan the path from truck to foundation. On complex projects, that plan covers crane placement, ground conditions, overhead obstructions, and how the load stays controlled at every point along the way.
Not every move uses a crane. Riggers also use machine skates, gantries, jacks, and rollers to move equipment through tight plant interiors where a crane cannot reach. Safety drives all of it: hardware inspections before every pick, clear signals, and one person responsible for the decision to fly the load.
